Game Center without OpenFeint... can it be done yet?

A lot of people don't like OpenFeint. It's reputation is less than flawless.

I would strongly prefer to have the ability to ONLY use Game Center and not need to show the user anything about OpenFeint at all

Is this possible yet? ETA?

I'm also very interested about this one. Is there a possibility to use Game Center only (without showing any OpenFeint stuff to the user)?

+1

I think this is really important. People expect the Game Center functionality these days. It would also bring more exposure for Corona games because many people check Game Center to see what their friends are playing.

in the moment game center is only available through open feint integration. in another thread carlos was very clear about the priorities: game center is not on top of the list.
but I hope it will come eventually.

>> A lot of people don't like OpenFeint

really? I do like it!

and the users I talked to either
- have accounts on open feint and game center
- or they aren't using social game platforms at all
(that second group is definitely the bigger one!)

the third group are people I met in Open Feint forums and chat.
phew, they really have some crazy achievement hunters there, haha!

OpenFeint is today what MySpace was when Facebook was doing its first steps. GameCenter is very soon going to be what Facebook is today and Openfeint is going to have no luck to follow this path.

I consider it as a tragic and an extremely pathetic decision not to follow the trends that the major market maker (Apple) is establishing. Apple has the power to extinguish Openfeint in a time of months and the money to make GameCenter the first step towards an iOS broader-scope social network like FaceBook (and beyond).

To the point now, while our lucky fellow mates, the xCode developers, are currently working on their plans to offer innovative turn-based multiplayer games (iOS 5), which is the current major trend in AppStore today, at the same time we are chatting about the existential meaning of GameCenter and the potentialities of the next major loser (OF), in the app market that brings the majority of the earnings to the developers (iOS).

Months later in the future, when every single platform will have fully supported GameCenter and the whole thing will not be a game feature anymore but just an essential user demand, we are going to spend 1-2 months of Ansca's development time to become in par with the competition.

This is not the best way to help developers in making innovative titles...

Plz reconsider the position of GameCenter in the priorities list.
1-2 top hit titles made with Corona will be a much better advertisement for the company than some additional cross-platform feature.

Regards

I am just about to complete my first game, and I am quite disappointed their is no stand alone GameCenter :( But really can't complain that much...

It would be great if we had the option to choose between Openfeint, GameCenter or both.

One reason I moved to Corona from GLBasic is for GameCenter integration. And of coarse because Corona has, In-app purchasing, Ads, Facebook, Box2d, UI Controls, Simulator, Great Community and soon Cloud.

I agree with this 100%. I find it very hard to understand why true game center support is not a VERY high priority for an SDK that is arguably very gaming centered/friendly. I personally do not like Openfeint very much at all, and unfortunately about 90% of people I have personally observed playing our game for the first time immediately react to the OF intro screen with an extremely fast NO THANKS. Maybe this is habit and training from various pop-up behavior from other software experiences, but I've seen the same people using game center on their iOS devices.

I fear that when it was discovered that OF could be used in the meantime to hook into an *extremely limited* interaction with game center this was considered "fixed".

There are a lot of very important things that have been implemented in the meantime- no question about that. However, bottom line, this is a supremely high priority item for any game being released these days on iOS. This is not going to change, and as we wait on it our games will always be lacking in the iOS marketplace.

I was unsure of the impact of game center when it was announced, but there is a lot that happens in a over a year. I cannot tell you how many casual gamers I see every single day going directly to game center and not even blinking. It's part of the major overall iOS gaming ecosystem now, as such I think it should be seriously re-examined.

it wasn't considered "fixed" it was a stopgap - and i should know. i implemented the code to enable GC via OF.

why hasn't it been done? it is on our roadmap and as soon as we go over all our features, tally, and figure out a schedule for the next release you will know what the status is.

That's great news Carlos. I was only discussing it here from a perspective of having no way of really knowing what has gone on behind the scenes or what the update on this was, so I hope you know I wasn't trying to put you on the defensive about it. Thanks for your hard work and all the team too, I have no doubts that Corona is going to keep getting stronger and stronger.

Really nice to see this thread is being noticed by Ansca staff. I'm just completing my second iPad game ( Lander Hero preview at Touch Arcade ) and have been hoping for a real Game Center support to appear. I'm also one of those who find the OF info screen scary ;)

I hope the ansca crew is working on implementing the new GC features that come with iOS 5:

"iOS is the world’s most popular gaming platform. With iOS 5, you can get your game face on with even more Game Center features. Post a profile picture. Meet your match with new friend recommendations based on the games you play and the players you already know. Discover new games without leaving Game Center. And size up an opponent on the spot with new overall achievement scores."

I want ALL of that! :) pleeeez

GC = garbage collect?

Game Center would be cool.

I really dislike OFeint as well. I am just annoyed anytime it asks me to use it on games.

I'm hoping by time I go live with my game, (october it looks like at this point, maybe sept) this will be available......hehe that would be nice.

Sorry for the confusion, carlos.
with "GC" I meant "Game Center" :)

not D&G Dolce Gabbana?

@canupa : and you actually fell for it?

;-)

c.

argh, you've got me there!
note to self: get used to carlos' jokes.

Hi,

GameCenter is not reflected at all in the roadmap. Or am i looking at the outdated version?
I'm talking about Resources>Roadmap.

Any update on the scheduling for this feature? Thanks!

I too would like to +1 this feature.
Ive just integrated OF + GC (Simple as alsways thanks Ansca).
While it definitely adds allot of great functionality to the game, I feel that the user experience suffers too mutch to justify leaving it in... I think I will wait until I can integrate Game Center alone.

You know what?.. I take it back. Been playing with Open Fient a little more these days and its actually pretty great. It doesn't have the same clean simplicity of GC, but it makes up for it with great features and community.

If its good enough for half brick, its good enough for us.
