Currently the 2D graphic operations are poor. Take a look at Quartz, Cairo, Nodebox, Processing. 2D games not only need imaging, but also high quality vector graphic rendering. I don't think that this would be a complicated issue to pass-through the 2D capabilities of iOS and Android subsystems.
Additionally there must be a unique UI foundation, buttons, tabs, views (to slide) to develop real applications. And at this point, I admit, there might be a necessity to fork Corona SDK to "Game" and "App/Enterprise"-Edition. Based on such a UI foundation, there also could be an "Interface Builder", like Ext.JS / Sencha does.
