Endless runner game...

Hello,

I have my first game, created with corona, in review at apple. While it's in review, I'm already connecting my next game.

It will be something like Jackpack Joyride. An endless runner game, with power ups, different vehicles, ... Currently, we're looking for a suitable game engine. If we're going 2D, then our choices will be Unity or Corona.

I've seen some techniques for developing 2D platform games in Unity and it seems to work well. Since I already developed with Corona, and liked it very much, this is also an option. But I can't seem to find any techniques about how I could go about creating a game like this.

Do you have any techniques to share about how I could go about creating something like MonsterDash or Jetpack Joyride? I need the levels to be endless and dynamically built with pre made parts that can be randomly spawned.

Is it possible to do this with LIME or some other tool? Is it possible to design the different parts (with pickups, enemies, power ups, vehicles, ...) in LIME and then spawn and reorder them dynamically in the game?

Thanks!

Yeah, I've been looking at exactly the same thing.

I can't forsee any particular problems doing it in Corona, and my business partner and I did consider Unity as we both studied 3d at uni, but creating a 2d game in a 3d engine seemed to us like trying force a square peg into a round hole, (although I think Nyan Cat was made with Unity, so it can be done really well).

I saw a corona example of Cannabalt somewhere on the forums recently. Someone was charging for it as a useful framework for endless runner games, and if memory serves you could specify jump height, run speed, platform length and loads of other stuff. It looked fantastic, and when we're in a position to purchase a licence and publish, we will definitely buy it. (I'm not affiliated with it in any way:)

Personally, as you want it to be dynamically built, I wouldn't used Lime, (as it's a tile based editor). I think you could get better, more dynamic results if you spawn different obstacles/collectibles etc under certain conditions. However, having published an app already, you may be able to see merit in Lime for this project which I've missed.

Hope that helps, and check around for the Cannabalt sample.

Oh :) that template looks really nice... Thanks for the tip! Definitely worth checking out! :).

We're also not quite sure yet it it will be 2D or 3D... I'm a 3D artist so that was an options. But to limit our budget, corona would be a good choice. I guess I'll check out that template and learn from it.
