Textured triangles/quad

I have been reading that some people have been asking for filled triangles/quad. If that is to be implemented, I was wondering if it could be taken a step further,have the possibility of adding an image with some form of UV controls. If that is even possible?

I have a world that shatters apart,objects split creating complex polygon shapes ...

I could attempt a form of texture mapping using whatever is there, not sure how efficient that will be.
