Performance Issues with Large Amounts of Sprites?

Hello,

I am just wondering if there is still a significant performance issue when displaying a large amount of sprites at once? By large I mean a very large amount (like 1,000). I do not have an iPhone to test it sadly.

Can anyone give me feedback on their experience?

from my experience on 3GS about 150-200 all moving at same time is the most haven't tried on 4 or with static images

1000 and more? Forget it. We are talking about a mobile device here. The simulator will give you a wrong impression of what is possible on a mobile device. You need to test these things very early or you will waste your time in such a project.Of course it will depend on how big the sprites are and which framerate you are targeting. But 1000 sprites, nahh!

Okay does anyone have numbers? Like you can run 400 sprites in cocos 2d and still maintain 40fps with a 3gs.

I am just wondering what said performance is on an iphone before I continue. I don't have an iphone (yet) to test.

I got 'as many as 191 8x8 sprites spawning moving zooming fading removing at about 20fps
