Trial Users, Don't Upgrade to 2011.703

...unless you want to lose your ability to simulate iPhone 4, Nexus One, Sensation, and Galaxy Tab.

Yeah, I was kind of bummed after the fact too, seeing as how this restriction wasn't mentioned at all in the release notes.

Oh well, prevents non-subscribers from having to worry about figuring out those tricky dynamic image resolution and content scaling issues, huh!

Wow if this is true then it is a bit of a bummer. Why Ansca?

Well you can build for xCode and test the iPhone Retina Simulator there but then you might experience some performance bug.

dejay, you may wish to point out that test users who do not upgrade will also be missing out on all of the new features available since 591.

Such as;
- Storyboard
- inneractive Ads
- project templates (inc ebook, scene, game, etc.)
- new demo code
- native ui stuff in simulator (so you don't need to build to test)
- timer pausing/resuming
- Fix for iOS5 audio bug (notorious bug)

Plus a number of general improvements, tweaks and bug fixes. (And of course a lot more features than I could list above.)

You can build for Xcode and you can still build for device.

If you would prefer keeping the old build no one is going to stop you - but you're missing out ;)

Peach :)

Hello Peach.

I agree that the new features are amazing! BUT why mess a good thing like iPhone 4 in the simulator? I understand adding features but removing ones? Any reason why?

Thanks.

Mo

@Peach

That is a nice list of new features and Ansca is doing really well. However none of the new features , in my opinion, are as important as being able to simulate the iPhone 4 and other removed devices. Especially when just beginning like a lot of the new test drivers will be. Not having the ability to learn about dynamic content scaling until it slaps you in the face, ouch.

Having to build to device is quite a slow way of doing things especially when using Corona, something that prides itself (quite deservedly) on having a fast development cycle. I'm just curious as to why Ansca has done this? Is it starting to look at removing features (gimping) the test version? Because in my eyes that would be a bad move for Ansca.

I got into Corona because I was able to test drive it in all it's glory. I'm sure pretty much everyone (99.9%) here is the same and it's the way the industry works now. Unity, Unreal, Cocos etc. I'm now roughly two months from completing a three man game that is looking and feeling stunning. I love Corona and will buy my license just before I release, to get my full 12mths and hopefully turn around another game in that time. I'm sure I'm not the only one with this plan, in fact it is quite logical and something Ansca used to promote.

I'm sure hundreds of people, if not thousands, can relate to my story, So if Ansca is thinking about gimping I would seriously recommend against it.

Just my 2c

Hi Peach,

I agree, the latest build has a ton of great features. For instance, it adds the ability to use Lua files within subfolders, which prior to now was a major feature omission that prevented me from easily developing object-oriented Corona apps.

And I plan to buy a license as soon as I can verify that there are no other fatal "gotchas" that will prevent me from developing the features my app needs. For instance, content scaling and dynamic image resolution seems half-baked at this point, especially wrt spritesheets and such.

I have been strongly advocating Corona amongst my peers, but I'm afraid I have to stop because almost all of them use iPhone 4, and now the trial version won't even let them develop iPhone 4 apps in the simulator. That's just a no-go right off the bat; they won't even look at software that has such artificially-hobbled limitations.

Really, it comes across as being a money grab, whereas Corona doesn't need it. People will pay for the license when they are ready to publish an app; do you really need to browbeat them into premature purchase by withholding a critical and central feature from the trial version? Are you guys trying to get end-of-year sales up so that your Q4 balance sheet looks good?

Really, it comes across as being a money grab, whereas Corona doesn't need it.

Not sure about them not needing it, but it's definitely a big slap in the face. Could be it was either something like this, or a subscription hike and they chose this (but that's just speculation).

Come on ...

I was also a bit surprised seeing the "iphone 4 warning". Corona has never done those kind of interdiction.

Anyway, we must admit it's a fair move regarding all the features they give to us.

You can still develop on iphone 3 and see what your hirez visuals will look like on ipad skin( zooming is ok ).

So paying for the licence when close to be ready is still an option .

No ?

Anyway, we must admit it's a fair move regarding all the features they give to us.

I disagree. Had they come out and said, "Hey guys, this is what we're gonna do to encourage more of you to become paid subscribers." Then OK. But they chose to do it in a less than forthcoming manner. And judging by the standardized/canned responses from the Corona staff in the forums and blog, they apparently knew there would be a couple days worth of blowback and thus prepared for it. It's disappointing that this is the tactic they chose, especially when you consider all of the impassioned Flash bashing that goes on here.

And you're right, it's not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. In fact, it doesn't affect me at all. But the next one might.

"Really, it comes across as being a money grab, whereas Corona doesn't need it"

Yeah I wouldn't say that either. I wish them all the riches they can lay their hands on. However I hope Ansca remember the business model that got them lots of users in the first place. This move will see a reduction in the amount of new users. Which although some of them flake out or change to something else, a lot are still tinkering away and are basically money in the bank for Corona.

Update!

FTW!

Carlos / Walter,

Thank you for reconsidering default access to iOS and Android skins. This move makes it very easy for me to justify purchase of the SDK.

Good. That was the right decision.

Love the name. Skin-Gate. Ha, love your guys sense of humour.

Seriously was the right decision Ansca and it's refreshing to see a company that isn't afraid to admit it made a mistake. I can't wait to DL the new build and finish my game.

Humour and an openness surrounding decisions seems to spell bright futures for companies these days.

Kudos
